4 Basic Wine Characteristics For Picking Your Favorite Bottle!

As a wine store, we get a lot of questions regarding which brand or type is best. If we’re talking about taste in general and not about pairings, then it comes down to preference. We want nothing more than to help anyone who walks into our wine store make a great choice!

liquor store farragut

Here is a list of 4 basic wine characteristics and their influence on your wine. By understanding these, it narrows down your options the next time you visit our wine store!

1. Sweetness

More often than not, we sense the level of sweetness first. Focus your attention at the tip of your tongue to truly taste and feel (tingling sensation) the sweetness. Here at the wine store we love a little sweetness to our wine and if you do too, you may enjoy Moscato, for a dry alternative try Cabernet Sauvignon.

2. Acidity

When we taste acidity, it is often assumed there is a higher percentage of alcohol. However, it is completely normal for wines grown in cooler climates to be more acidic. So a Chardonnay from Burgundy will be more acidic than one from California. These often seem “spritzy” and lighter – complete opposite of rich and bold. If you find that you like the spritz on your tongue, some wines commonly known for high levels of acidity are Champagne, wines from New Zealand, Alsace, or Germany, and other cool areas. We have a range of these available at our wine store!

3. Tannin

Tannin dries your mouth and adds bitterness. However, this also adds structure and balance, making your drink last longer. Tannin leaves a lingering bitter/dry feeling after drinking. If you are fond of the taste, tannins are most commonly found in red wine like Nebbiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Sirah.

4. Body

This is a result of the variety, origin, alcohol level, and how it was made. Alcohol level adds more body, so if you find you want a full-bodied glass tonight, take a look at the alcohol level or ABV (alcohol by volume).

4 Basic Wine Characteristics For Picking Your Favorite Bottle!

Health Benefits From Winemaking Waste

buy wine knoxville

As a wine store, we understand and are happy to explain the many benefits each glass of wine has for you. However, it’s not every day we hear studies suggesting health benefits from winemaking waste. We’re sure other wine stores are just as happy to share this news as we are!

Winemaking

Grapes are mainly used in winemaking, and about 30% of it ends up as pomace. Pomace is the by-product of processed grape, which consists of skins, seeds, and stems – parts not used in making the final product.

Health Benefits

Pomace, though seems like a disposal problem for wineries, is actually a rich source of polyphenols, which has potential as an ingredient of healthy, functional, and innovative products in nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic fields.

The bioactive compounds are only partially extracted during the winemaking process. Anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial grape phenols show protective effects against chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegeneration.

Further analysis showed the best extracts having antioxidant and cholesterol-lowering biological activities.

As your local wine store, we feel it is our duty to let you know that drinking a glass or two also has its own health benefits. It can reduce the risk of getting a heart attack, diabetes, stroke, and it also slows down brain decline! Pick up a bottle at your local wine store in Knoxville today!

Let’s Talk about Wine: Tips to Make your Holiday Party Outstanding!

buy liquor farragut

At Campbell Station Wine and Spirits, we see no reason why you can’t enjoy a great glass of wine from your local liquor store in Farragut it’s not just cocktails and eggnogs – add some wine too at a holiday party.

Of course, there’s always going to be a way to enjoy your wine that’ll work better than anything else, and here at Campbell Station Wine and Spirits, we know this better than most. Today, we will talk about how to properly enjoy your wine at a holiday party!

Tip #1: Forgo the Plastic

It can be tempting to drink your wine from a plastic cup like how most do at parties, but take it from your liquor store in Farragut – don’t do this. Although you may be avoiding the possibility of broken cups and glasses, you’re also ruining your own experience, and your drink!

While plastic is a safe material to drink from, it alters the flavor of your wine. There’s no point in asking your local liquor store for recommendations on the best kind of wine if it’s going to taste different when you drink it, and it won’t even matter how much you paid for it!

Enjoy your holiday party, but also enjoy your wine! Invest in some sturdy crystal glasses and drink from those instead. If it’s an outdoor party and you’re on grass, chances are they won’t break if you accidentally drop them! At least that way you can truly enjoy the flavors of your wine, whether it’s a special bottle or an everyday favorite.

Tip #2: Accelerate your Chill

In the warmer weather, and even during the colder seasons, we here at Campbell Station Wine and Spirits encourage adequately chilling your drinks before indulging. Not only does this make them more enjoyable to drink, but it is also very refreshing.

As a local liquor store in Farragut, we witness a few mistakes. The one we hear about people making the most is trying to chill their bottles when they’re stood upright in a bucket of ice. Although eventually this will chill your drinks, it’s not the most effective way to do it.

Instead, try laying your bottles in a bath of ice and cold water; this will allow your wine to be adequately chilled in around twenty minutes – much quicker than if you stood your bottles in some ice. If you feel like you need more advice on how to properly chill your wine, then come into Campbell Station Wine and Spirits next time you’re in the area and we’ll be happy to help.

Tip #3: Experiment with Flavors

The huge range of wines you can find at Campbell Station Wine and Spirits should give you an indication of just how many flavors are available, and how many you’d be missing out on by not trying new one! Why not make your holiday party an occasion to try out some new flavors and expand your drink horizons, or maybe take some recommendations from your Farragut liquor store?

Now that you know to stick to drinking from crystal, and how to properly chill your bottles, you’ll be experiencing full flavor and have a new favorite drink in no time at all.

Alcohol Does Go Bad: Here’s How Long You Have to Finish Yours Off!

A common misconception we hear at Campbell Station Wine & Spirits is that alcohol never goes off. Of course, as a Farragut wine and liquor store, we have to know our stuff when it comes to the items we sell, and we can confirm: alcohol does indeed go bad. Due to the fact many people don’t even know that alcohol has an expiry date, we thought we’d put together some information to let you know how long you have to finish your booze off before it does go bad!

campbellstationwine

What causes alcohol to go bad?
Research conducted by Bacardi has shown that light, heat and oxygen are the three main factors in causing alcohol to go bad. For the most part “going bad” is to do with the taste and appearance of the drink; alcohol itself isn’t really capable of “going bad” in the sense that it’ll cause you bodily harm. However, changes in temperature, excessive exposure to light and being left open causing oxidization are all things that change the flavor of liquor and spirits, making them less desirable.

So, how long do you have to drink up?

Although the flavor of various alcoholic drinks will change after being opened, for the most part they still last quite a long time. When stored in a cool, dark place and left unopened, the majority of spirits and liquor will last indefinitely. However, once you’ve opened them the clock starts ticking (albeit slowly, for the most part) and you’ll have to get to drinking. Here’s how long your alcohol cabinet can stay stocked with the same bottles of spirit, liquor and wine for.

Whiskey
Whiskey, when left unopened and stored in a place such as a cupboard will keep pretty much indefinitely. Once opened, the flavor will inevitably begin degrading (whiskey bottles aren’t actually air tight, leading to oxidization). Once your bottle is open, it’s recommended that you consume within a year from the point that you hit half a bottle left. Anything less than that, and you should try to drink it within three or so months.

Vodka
Vodka lasts even longer than whiskey, even when opened. Like whiskey, when left unopened and stored appropriately, vodka will keep a very, very long time. Even when opened it will still taste largely the same even after a few years, although you should try to drink it within two or three years, as a guideline.

Rum
Rum is fairly similar to whiskey and vodka in that it’ll keep indefinitely when unopened and stored properly. However, once you’ve opened that bottle and had a drink, you’d be best getting it finished within three months to keep the flavor there and keep the drink enjoyable.

Champagne
Champagne has a fairly low life span after it has been opened. Although it’ll keep for a long time before you open the bottle (again, store it in a cool, dark place), once opened you’ll need to finish it within 24 hours or your bubbly will be a bit flat.

Wine
The lifespan of wine after it has been opened depends largely on the age of it. We all know that it’ll keep for a long time when stored in the appropriate environment, but once opened it’ll last nowhere near as long as the spirits in your liquor cabinet. Older wines may last only a day or so after being opened. You might get up to a week from younger wines, but that isn’t a guarantee. Try to open your wine only when you plan to drink it, and choose spirits for slower drinks.

The Key to Choosing, Storing and Serving Wine

Here at Campbell Station Wine and Spirits, your friendly liquor store in Farragut, we are committed to helping you get the best wine experience by choosing and storing, and serving them the right way. As they always say, you can never go wrong with great wine — but how do you really keep your wine at its best? Is there a proper way of storing and serving your bottle of wine?

Campbell Station Wine & SpiritsHow do you like your wine? Do you like it fresh, or do you like it aged? Screw capped wines are intended to preserve your favorite wine’s freshness. Corked wines, on the other hand, use natural cork to allow the wine to slowly evolve through the years. As an old adage goes, old wines are tasty.  Natural corks make room for the wine to “breathe”, thus, allowing it to age.

Perhaps you’d find yourself asking at times, “should I buy the expensive bottle or should I just go for a cheaper one?” There is a saying that goes, “you get what you pay for”. The same rule applies when it comes to choosing wines. Although it is not safe to assume that all expensive wines are the best, there is still truth that the more expensive the wine, the depth and quality of taste maybe richer and more complex, offering a diverse taste bed experience.

How should you store your wine for the long-term? The key to proper storage is on how you can maintain optimal storage conditions. A cool, humid dark and odorless storage is needed to keep your wine at its best state.  To consume or not to consume right away? Well, this is a common question that most wine lovers often ask themselves after buying their favorite Cabernet or Sauvignon Blanc. This generally depends on how old your wine is. You can get the most of older wines by serving it right away upon opening. If this is not the case, the key, on the other hand, to getting the best flavor from your wine is to decant it more or less than an hour before serving. Naturally, the flavor becomes more prominent if you allow a little air to get into it. When it comes to the ideal temperature of serving wine, the basic rule requires that reds shouldn’t be served too warm, while whites shouldn’t be served too cold.

THE REAL SCORE BETWEEN WINE AND YOUR HEALTH

There has been a lot of buzz going on about the perks of drinking wine moderately. But what really is the real score between your favorite cabernet and your health? Here at Campbell Station Wine & Spirits, we deem that all the ravings about the amazing health benefits of wine are not just merely born out of pure hearsay. Your friendly Farragut liquor store gathered a handful of reasons for you to drink good quality wine once in a while. These studies purport that moderate drinking of wine can actually do well to your overall health.  Read up for this is actually good news for all the wine makers and wine lovers out there!

Campbell Station Wine and Spirits

Wine is good for your health

Put the brakes on cancer

Who would have thought that drinking wine in moderation may reduce your chances of getting cancer? Yes, you heard it right. Findings from a study published in Journal of Cellular Biochemistry implied that breast cancer cells can be slowed down by the compound phenol found in wine. Resveratrol, an antioxidant in wine, is also believed to impede the growth of liver cancer cells. Good to know that a slew of antioxidants in wine seems to put the brakes on the growth of different kinds of cancer cells.

Sharpen your wits

Turn up those little grey cells of yours. A glass of wine each day may actually boost those quick wits and sharp minds. A study in Columbia University supported that moderate wine drinkers showed a decline of brain function at a slower rate.

Promote stronger bones

A flurry of reports also suggested that wine, when consumed in moderation, may improve bone mineral density for both men and women. Higher mineral density consequently points to stronger, more resilient bones.

Healthy heart

Karolinska Institute’s studies found that wine drinkers may cut their risk of dying due to heart disease and cancer. It has been shown that wine appears to dilate arteries and improve blood circulation. A glass or two of wine every day may reduce one’s risk of developing clots which might hamper blood supply to the heart. The substance phenol which is found in wine is also believed to reduce the risk of artery damage brought about by the “bad” cholesterol.

All these impressive claims might propel you to drink down a bottle of red wine. Despite all the good findings, excessive drinking should never be an option and is a completely different story. Otherwise, many physicians would have opted to hand out an abundance of prescriptions for wine.

Here’s a toast to a healthy life!
